FedEx Delivery Exceptions: The Basics
fedex letters10 status exception codesnoting the reason for changing the delivery method, "business as usual", model for a particular shipment. Again, not all indicate that the package will arrive late, just that something else has happened.
What does the "Exception" status mean?
This could be a delay due to customs clearance, bad weather or possibly a natural disaster, a problem with the delivery vehicle such as a flat tire, a driver trying to deliver at a closed company, a collection exception when the package is not from shipper's usual location, or even if FedEx holds the shipment for delivery closer to the commitment date. A package with a damaged barcode, a holiday, or someone having lunch and not opening the door to sign the package can also trigger a shipping exception.
How to avoid sending exception code
Some shipping exceptions that cannot be avoided. For example, the weather or early closing of business during the day. However, there are others that you can plan. Here are some to consider:
- Re-quality check:Orders may be delayed if a digit of the postal code or numerical part of the address is incorrect. If you see an increase in errors, it could indicate a weakness in your business. Perhaps an employee can check outbound packages to ensure addresses are correct or that barcodes are easy to read and adhere well to packages.
- Review the packaging:If the boxes leak or fall apart, this may be your responsibility as the shipper. Not only will the package and potentially its contents be damaged (due to its failure), but it could also be delayed. If you have reports of damaged packaging, review your system to see if there is a problem within the company or with the distributor. provided by FedExpacking guidelineseliminate or reduce problems.
- Shipping damage:In rare cases, FedEx may damage a package in transit, which may cause a delay in the carrier's inspection. FedEx usually covers the first $100 in damages and provides additional insurance that can be purchased when setting up your shipment. Third-party companies also offer insurance options, some of which are cheaper than policies offered directly by carriers. If you or your customer receive a shipping damage exception message, please retain all original packaging materials after the item is delivered for us to process the claim.
- Remind customers that delays can be caused by:If customers enter their own shipping information, your site can automatically remind them to double-check their entries to confirm they've reviewed them. Remind them that any errors on their part could result in delays and possible additional charges. While no customer would want an exception or delay in shipping, if they needed to confirm their details, they could find themselves to blame for shipping issues.
- Construction of holiday overtime:Holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas are an obvious time to notify customers of potential delivery delays. However, local holidays such as Mardi Gras and St. Patrick's Day, are also valid reasons for the FedEx shipping exception in certain parts of the country.
Alerting customers to potential delays before shipping a package makes it much easier to set customer expectations and improve relationships. Getting a late shipping service exception is less of an issue for customers if they knew before shipping that they could bring it forward.

Requesting and Processing FedEx Returns
Requesting and processing FedEx shipping refunds is also strictly regulated by FedEx.
